It has truly been an amazing week full of miracles, great lessons, great new investigators, and a great stake conference.
One of the really great parts of the week was seeing really good progression with a lot of our investigators. I think one of the hardest things about missionary work in Korea is finding the time to meet with all of the people we want to with their busy schedules, but this week we were able to work some time out with lots of people and see some investigators we haven’t been able to in a while because of all the holiday stuff. One of the most important things was that we were able to meet and have a great lesson with 김도현 형제님 who is the son of the family that we are teaching. With the holidays we haven’t been able to meet with the family in a while and it almost felt like we were losing our relationship with them, but we were able to set up an appointment with the son to meet at a cafe near his home in 기장 and had a really great lesson where we taught about keeping the Sabbath day holy and answered any questions that he has thought of over the course of meeting with us. We also invited his family to stake conference and through coordinating with the bishops wife (who referred them) were able to have all of the come to stake conference even though it was pretty far away from their home. We sadly couldn’t teach them a lesson but are planning to meet with them at this upcoming week and reestablish a date for baptism. Among meeting with some other people we had a particularly good lesson with our investigator 박태환 형제님 who is the accountant that is super good at English and just recently started progressing super well. We had such an amazing lesson where we studied 2 Nephi 31 and talked a lot about baptism. Even though he has lots of fears about baptism, he asked us a lot of questions all about the process and the authority and the importance of baptism, and agreed to be baptized if he gets an answer to his prayers this week! We committed him to read, think about, and pray about the Book of Mormon this week, and are planning to meet again on Friday so I am hoping for the best!
Another big miracle of the week is that we got a referral from one of the members of the ward this week and were able to meet and teach another family! The family is a mother and her two sons who works with a member of our ward at a store near the church. Because both of her sons are students and she really cares about them and wants them to succeed she asked for our help to teach them English. We went to their house this week with the sister missionaries and taught the two sons English for 30 minutes and then discussed the gospel for another 30 in Korean. Both parts went amazingly well. Even though they have absolutely no religious background, we talked about their beliefs and discussed God and prayer. We committed them to pray this week and the mother even prayer for us at the end of the lesson (honestly not seen that too many times). I am still curious to see how everything goes but it is looking like we can meet them about once a week and are planning to invited the two boys to our youth activity this Saturday. It is really a testament to me of the importance of member missionary work in finding people that are prepared. It is especially powerful because when these investigators come to church they will already have the friends and support system to help them stay active.
Another amazing thing this week was our Busan Stake Conference with the visit of Elder Whiting of the seventy who came on assignment of President Packer to reorganize the Busan Stake Presidency. Man was it a powerful meeting. Earlier in the week this last week and throughout the transfer Elder Kim and I have been focusing a lot on the needs of our zone and how to help the members missionaries and investigators within it. While my area, Haeundae, and the are that I was trained, Gwangan, are both relatively strong wards with about 50-70 attending members, there are several areas within the zone where only about 10 members come to church on Sunday. In these areas the missionaries often serve as counselors in the branch presidencies or as secretaries and do a lot of work to keep the branches running (preparing and blessing the sacrament, giving talks, teaching classes, etc.). It can be especially hard in these areas to bring investigators to church and work with the members to do missionary work because they are so busy with their own wards and keeping everything afloat. Anyway, as I have been thinking about how to help these I remember on Saturday morning saying an especially fervent prayer asking for the revelation to know what things we can do to help these missionaries and these members and the Stake meetings that evening and the next day were a direct answer to that prayer. Elder Whiting gave an amazing talk in the Saturday evening session where he spoke of the importance of the vision and leadership of bishops and the importance of councils (especially ward council and PEC). When all of the members and missionaries work together on a council behind the leadership of the bishop he promised that miracles would come forth. In the Sunday meeting the next day he called a new stake president and councilors who used to be President Barrow’s councilor in the Busan Mission and taught about the importance of paying tithing and how to receive personal revelation. I know that the council he gave and the stake president he called were inspired revelation for the Busan Stake and also an answer to my personal prayers. It really testified to me of the truth that God does speak to his children in these days and that through our priesthood leaders he guides and directs his church. We were also able to attend the meeting with our investigator family and a few recent converts in our ward and after the meeting Elder Whiting even came and greeted and briefly talked with the people we attended with. 2 other missionaries and I was also able to briefly speak with Elder Whiting after the Saturday evening session and he asked were we was from and gave us some advice about how to be good missionaries.
It has really been a great week here and I have seen real progress with our investigators, the fruits of working with members and developing strong relationships, and an answer to my personal prayers. I truly know that this is Heavenly Father’s true church that Jesus Christ established during his earthly ministry and that through the power of revelation and a living prophet he guides this church today. This is Christ’s church and as a missionary I am doing his work.
Have a great week! Lots of love from Korea!
